Name & History
Crumlin gets its name from the crooked valley that is known as Lansdowne valley. The valley was formed by glacial erosion in the distant past and is now bisected by the Camac river. The valley is situated behind Drimnagh and is largely made up of recreational parkland and a Pitch and Putt course. The entrance to the Pitch and Putt is from Slieve Bloom Road opposite Slieve Bloom Park and the entrance to the park is on Davitt Road. The valley was left idle from the 1930s to the 1990s when the residents of Slieve Bloom Park managed to get Dublin Corporation to develop the valley into an amenity to be enjoyed by the local population.
Some of the local social amenities in the area are named after some of the 1916 Rebels who had a training camp in near by Kimmage at sundrive cross roads. Such as Pearse college on clogher road and Eamonn Ceannt Park in Sundrive.
There's a Dublin Jewish cemetery located on Aughavannagh Road in the Dolphin's Barn area of crumlin. Leopold Bloom in James Joyce's "Ulysses (novel)", on his death bed expressed a desire to his friend 'Sniffer' Cohen to be buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Dolphin's Barn. Despite the cemetery committee rejection, he was buried by Cohen at the site in a very unconventional manner in the end.
