Encyclopedia
Colonia Dublán is one of the two surviving Mormon colonies in Mexico (the other being Colonia Juárez) located in the state of Chihuahua.
History
The settlement was founded by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in the late 19th century as part of a large colonizing effort, instigated by Brigham Young, which dotted the map of western United States and northern Mexico. These groups were sent to Mexico to establish the church and spread their beliefs throughout the country.
Present day
Colonia Dublán is currently a very small town located just north of Nuevo Casas Grandes. Most of the remaining colonizers engage in agriculture and produce crops such as peaches, apples, pecans and chile. There is also significant production of wheat and cattle. There are efforts to develop a bed and breakfast sector. The Mormon community now includes a number of Mexican converts. The remaining descendants of the colonizers belong to the LDS Church and continue to serve a role within that church in Mexico.
Trivia
Michigan Governor George Romney, father of Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, was born here and many relatives remain in the area.
