Geography

Châtelat has an area, , of 4.15 km² (1.6 sq mi). Of this area, 2.28 km² (0.88031292159098 sq mi) or 54.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.75 km² (0.675678777536936 sq mi) or 42.2% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.11 km² (27.2 acre) or 2.7% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.02 km² (4.9 acre) or 0.5% is either rivers or lakes.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 1.7% and transportation infrastructure made up 1.0%. 32.3% of the total land area is heavily forested and 9.9% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 2.2% is used for growing crops and 31.8% is pastures and 20.2% is used for alpine pastures. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.
