. It has been the stage for numerous landmark discoveries in fisheries, environmental chemistry and ecosystem ecology that now serve as a foundation for many environmental practices used to preserve, protect, and restore the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Over the decades, the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory has focused on two missions: promoting excellence in marine and aquatic research and graduate education at the University of Maryland, while sharing the results of ongoing exploration with the larger scientific community and citizens. It is located on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay approximately 60 miles south of Washington, D.C. The location of Chesaeake Biological Laboratory at the mouth of the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay has placed it within easy reach of diverse aquatic and terrestrial habitats in one of the world's largest - and well studied - estuarine systems.
