 road (18°7′48"S 30°8′9"E). According to the 1992 Population Census, the town had a population of 30,191. The population was estimated at 36,000 in 2002.

Chegutu is also a constituency which was won by the Zanu PF candidate at the 2005 general election although major irregularities was reported.

The town was originally called Old Hartley after Henry Hartley, an early hunter and explorer but was 34 km east of modern Chegutu. White settlers flocked to the area because gold

 was discovered here and the Butterfly and Giant mines strung up. The settlement was moved to its present location in 1899 and by 1901 the railway reached the settlement. Hartley was proclaimed a village in 1903 and by 1974 Hartley was granted municipality status. In 1982 the town's name was officially changed to Chegutu.
