. He teaches European and international history at Harvard. Maier has also served as the director of the Center for European Studies at Harvard.

Maier has written several books. Among these is 'Among Empires: American Ascendancy and its Predecessors' (2006) and 'Dissolution: the Crisis of Communism and the End of East Germany'(1997). He has also written on the Cold War, Holocaust controversies ('The Unmasterable Past,' 1988) and the 1920s ('Recasting Bourgeois Europe,' 1975).
