History

Chaffee County was created by the Colorado legislature on February 10, 1879, out of southern Lake County

According to the 2000 census, the county has a total area of 1015.01 square miles (2,628.9 km²), of which 1013.45 square miles (2,624.8 km²) (or 99.85%) is land and 1.55 square miles (4 km²) (or 0.15%) is water.
