The archive houses over half a million photographs, 50,000 maps and plans, over 18,000 posters and announcements, a large collection of ephemera, 13,000 newspapers and periodicals, a library and a microfilm collection. The Steven Spielberg Jewish Film Archive

, with over 3,000 film and video titles, is located in the CZA.The archive also has a large stamp collection and a vast store of genealogical material.

The archive was established in Berlin in 1919, then the seat of the Zionist Executive. In 1933, it was moved to the National Institutions building in Jerusalem. A permanent home was built in November 1987, near Binyanei HaUma in Jerusalem's Romema
