It grows to between 2 and 3 metres in height and has a rigid habit. The terete leaves
are 20 to 30 mm long and 0.5 to 1 mm wide with sharply pointed tips. Crimson flower spikes with yellow anthers are produced between November and March in the species native range.
The species was first formally described by English botanist John Lindley
in 1849 in The Journal of the Horticultural Society of London. In his 2006 paper New Combinations in Melaleuca for Australian Species of Callistemon (Myrtaceae), Lyndley Craven, a research botanist from the Australian National Herbarium proposed that this species should be renamed as Melaleuca brachyandra.
