History

The station was launched on September 1, 1974. CITV was originally owned by Allarcom, owned by Dr. Charles Allard, and launched as Independent Television (ITV), a brand used until 2000 when it became part of the Global Television Network. In 1991, Allarcom was purchased by Western International Communications

News operation

The station produces 7 hours of news every weekday, and 5 hours on the weekends (a 2-hour Saturday morning show, an hour of news at 6 pm, and 30 minute newscasts at 11 pm on both Saturday and Sunday). Global Edmonton is the most-watched television station for news in Edmonton, with its morning, early evening newscasts beating all other programs competing in the same timeslots.

The station is also the first in Edmonton to have a helicopter. The helicopter, called Global 1, is shared with CHED (AM)
