CCA's artistic and educational programme primarily focuses on visual arts, contemporary music and film. It is established and recognised as one of Europe’s leading contemporary galleries.

The CCA was established in December 1992, in the premises of the former Third Eye Centre which had been founded there as a multi-media arts centre by Tom McGrath

The CCA is housed in the Grecian Chambers, a category A listed building, designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson
