Encyclopedia
Leopold "Butters" Stotch is a fictional character in the animated television series South Park.
Voiced by series co-creator Matt Stone, Butters is a nine-year-old fourth grader attending elementary school in his hometown of the fictional South Park, Colorado. He is cheerful, naïve, optimistic, and well-behaved compared to other kids but can become increasingly worrisome, especially when faced with the likelihood of his parents' austerity. Originally just a background character, Butters's role gradually increased as the series progressed, eventually reaching a status of prominence alongside that of the show's original core group of Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick. The character is loosely based on South Park director of animation Eric Stough, whom Stone and Trey Parker regarded as a "goody-goody" because of his reluctance to offend. His nickname evolved from Parker and Stone repeating "little buddy" for about three years, the latter having been eventually morphed into "Butters".
Character
In tradition with the show's animation style, Butters is composed of simple geometrical shapes, and is animated to give the impression of being a construction paper cutout composition, as he originally was during the early days of the show's run. Butters has a large tuft of blonde hair on top of his head, and wears an aquamarine jacket with dark green trousers. He frequently stammers and fidgets when he talks. In the episode "AWESOM-O", he states that his birthday is September 11, and he is the only child of Stephen and Linda Stotch, by whom Butters faces the perpetual looming prospect of getting grounded. The relationship with his parents often plays a major part in episodes in which Butters has a significant role. Peer pressure often leads Butters to participate in activities that leave him fearful of consequentially making his mom and dad "awful sore." Butters is also eager to appease his parents, and enthusiastically looks forward to their outings together.
Butters doesn't indulge in foul-mouthed language as often as the other children on the show, preferring expressions such as "Oh, hamburgers!", but he has been known to resort to profanity in emotional moments. His virtue and gullibility often lead to misfortune at the hands of others, particularly Cartman. Usually submissive, Butters has come to terms with being a frequent scapegoat, but in rare instances he has taken an assertive stance against his parents and classmates, sometimes even providing the moral monologue at the end of an episode, something more commonly done by Stan or Kyle.
When at work or play by himself, Butters is fond of singing "If You Leave Me Now" by Chicago, and variations of "Loo-loo-loo I got some apples/Loo-loo-loo you got some too/Loo-loo-loo let’s get together/have ourselves a loo-loo-loo". He continues to wear Pull-Ups, and suffers from a herniated colon, a condition he has to treat with medicinal suppositories. Once an accomplished competitive tap dancer, Butters is also skilled at other types of dancing. During the sixth season, Butters developed a Gollum-esque obsession with pornography. His favorite computer game is Hello Kitty! Island Adventure, and became an internet celebrity after starring in a viral video.
History
Butters made his first major speaking appearance in the episode "Two Guys Naked in a Hot Tub". By the end of the fifth season his popularity had grown, and the episode "Butters' Very Own Episode" featured him as the central main character. During most of the sixth season, Kenny did not make one of his inexplicable returns after his death previous to Butters having his own episode, and Butters spent most of the season as part of the circle of friends that included Stan, Kyle, and Cartman. Seen as not worthy of filling the void left by Kenny, the three eventually ousted him in favor of Tweek Tweak.
As a result, Butters vengefully adopted the alter ego of Professor Chaos. Intending to be a supervillain, Professor Chaos wears a green cape, and a helmet and gauntlets constructed out of cardboard and aluminum foil. Butters as Professor Chaos received much focus during the back-to-back episodes "Professor Chaos" and "Simpsons Already Did It", where he took on his younger friend Dougie as his sidekick General Disarray and ultimately failed at their several ill-prepared attempts to create "worldwide chaos". Professor Chaos has sparingly made only a few appearances since.
Despite both being displaced from his role as the "fourth friend" and the eventual return of Kenny, Butters has continued to be a major character in recent seasons. Still the social outcast, he has nevertheless been seen spending considerable amount of time with the other children, and continues to be a frequent source of help to Cartman, while also being the main victim of Cartman's pranks and abuse.
