History

The earliest mention of Brüttelen is in 1142 when it was called Britinie. It also appears in 1148 as Britelgio and in 1183 as Britillo. In French it was known as Bretiège.

Geography

Brüttelen has an area, , of 6.62 km² (2.6 sq mi). Of this area, 4.62 km² (1.8 sq mi) or 69.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.48 km² (0.571431194716952 sq mi) or 22.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.47 km² (0.181468014538491 sq mi) or 7.1% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.04 km² (9.9 acre) or 0.6% is either rivers or lakes.

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.9% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.9%. 21.9% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 58.9% is used for growing crops and 9.8% is pastures, while 1.1% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.
