Plot
The adventures of bear brothers Kenai and Koda continue in Disney's Brother Bear 2. While the first movie dealt with Kenai's relationship with Koda, this one focuses more on his bond with a young human, Nita.
Picking up several months after the original Brother Bear, Kenai (Patrick Dempsey) - now a grizzly bear - is living happily with his foster brother Koda (Jeremy Suarez). Having just awoken from hibernation, the bears are off to Crowberry Ridge for the first berries of the season. Unfortunately, Kenai's haunted by memories of his childhood friend Nita, to whom he gave a special amulet many years ago.
Meanwhile in a village not far away, Nita (Mandy Moore) - now a young woman - is getting married to a hunter named Atka. Suddenly an earthquake erupts, ruining the wedding and leaving Nita scared and confused. That night, she consults the village shaman (Wanda Sykes), who says that Nita can't wed Atka because her amulet connects her to Kenai. In order to break the bond, Nita and Kenai must go to Hokani Falls - where the amulet was given - and burn it on the Equinox. To help them find each other, the Great Spirits bless Nita with the ability to speak to animals.
Soon, the old friends are reunited and off - although Kenai is reluctant to break off their "engagement" - with Koda along for the ride. During the trip, the trio must deal with thieving raccoons, Nita's fear of water, and the romantic problems of moose brothers Rutt and Tuke (Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas).
Also on the journey, Kenai and Nita fall in love, making Koda feel jealous and neglected. One night, he overhears his big brother being asked if he ever wanted to return to the human world. When the answer's yes, Koda runs away to the nearby mountains. Nita eventually finds him but they get caught in an avalanche, only to be rescued by Kenai. He in turn promises never to leave his animal family.
At last, the travellers reach their destination and Nita burns the amulet. Sadly, she also loses her power to talk to the bears. Deeply regretful and heartbroken, Nita says good-bye before running off in tears.
The next day, Koda asks his older brother if he's in love with Nita. However, Kenai refuses to answer directly (even though it's obvious that he does indeed still love her). In an act of total selflessness, Koda prays for the Spirits to make Kenai human again so he can be with the woman he cherishes.
Koda then goes to Nita's village to fetch her but is pursued by the hunters there. Luckily Kenai - who had heard of Koda's plan through Rutt and Tuke - comes to rescue his little brother but he too is pursued. By this time, Nita's finally decided to follow her heart and not go through with her arranged marriage. She sees what's happening and rushes to save the bears. With help from the moose, Koda is rescued unharmed. However, Kenai is almost killed by the thoughtless Atka. Outraged, Nita dumps Atka on the spot and then rushes to Kenai's aid.
Fortunately, she's able to save him and they finally confess their true feelings to each other. Just then, the Great Spirits appear and give the bears a second chance to talk to Nita, in order to sort things out. Kenai tells Nita he can't become a human again because Koda needs him, so Nita decides to let the Great Spirits transform her into a bear, which they gladly do. The following day, Kenai and Nita marry with all their friends at the wedding, including the moose brothers and their new mates. The movie ends with the Great Spirits transforming the picture of young Kenai and Nita at Hokani Falls into that of a couple of bears.
Extra Info
- Jason Marsden, as heard in the first trailer, was originally announced to voice Kenai, voiced by Joaquin Phoenix in the first film, but according to Reuters, Patrick Dempsey ultimately voiced Kenai. However, the end credits still note him as one of the additional voices.
- Aired on March 3, 2007 on Disney Channel Asia. It aired on Toon Disney in the United States on June 15, 2007. Also, the film premiered on Disney Channel in the United States on July 6, 2007.
- Most of the secondary characters' names (Nita's aunts, the moosettes, the shaman, etc.) are never mentioned in the film but revealed in the credits.
- Unusually, Kenai is never shown wearing the bear totem he was given in the original film.
- Only five of the original characters return for the sequel: Kenai, Koda, Rutt, Tuke, and Tug. However, the bear couple from the original film are also seen in one scene.
- Each film contains a different shaman woman.
