History
The Village of Brockport was incorporated in 1829. This village was founded around 1820 and grew to importance as a port on the
Erie CanalThe Erie Canal is a man-made waterway in New York that runs about 363 miles from Albany on the Hudson River to Buffalo at Lake Erie, completing a navigable water route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes...
, and the village was briefly the terminus of the canal until the western end of the canal was completed. The village name is purported to be a shorted form of "Brockways Port."

Crime
Brockport has a notably low crime rate, but recently saw its first homicide in 26 years in a shooting spree that ended in the Rochester suburb of Canandaigua. On Saturday, February 14, 2009, shortly before 5 a.m., three people were shot by gunman Frank Garcia at Lakeside Memorial Hospital on West Ave. in Brockport. Mary Sillman, 23, and Randall Norman, 41 died from the gunshot wounds. Later in the day, Garcia killed two more people, Christopher Glatz, 45, and his wife, Kim, 38, in Ontario County. The husband and wife were killed execution style. Garcia was taken into custody on the same day at a Western New York restaurant.
