The school was faced with a controversial crisis in 2007 when it was under threat of closure; however after protests and numerous hours of work by the whole community it was saved.

Broad Oak has its own annual radio station called BOSC FM which runs for two days. Since 2005, it has transmits on 87.7 FM throughout Bury.

Before it became Broad Oak High School, the school was known variously as Ashmeadow, Belgate, Eastwood, Seedfield, Wellington.
