Plot

The plot follows the life of Noble/Celeste, who is forced to remain disguised as her deceased twin brother, and her daughter (also named Celeste) in their secluded mansion with Noble's insane mother. Celeste Jr. is hidden away from the world until the mother crafts a plan to seduce their neighbor (Fletcher) and announces that Celeste Jr. is an orphaned cousin. Fletcher is actually Celeste Jr.'s grandfather, as his son, Eliot, had discovered Noble was a girl and raped her.

The marriage between Noble's mother and Fletcher was initially harmonious until the return of Fletcher's daughter, Betsy. Betsy's return leads to a series of events culminating with the discovery that Noble is a girl. A fight between Betsy and Noble's mother leaves the mother dying and, whilst trying to protect her mother, Noble kills Betsy. At the end of the novel, Noble and her daughter are both placed into foster care.
