A Bird Dog is:


1. A person who is paid a referral fee for locating and promoting business opportunities for someone else. For example a referral fee, or "bird dog fee", is sometimes used in business. If Jake hires a company to perform some type of service and then recommends the company to Chester, who then hires the company and gives Jake as a reference, the company may pay Jake for "retrieving" the new customer.

2. Customers and associates of an automotive dealership that receive referral fees to promote customer loyalty. These networks are often structured as customer rewards programs.

, a "bird dog" is someone who locates properties for investors or silent partners. In many U.S. states this practice is illegal unless the person receiving the fee has a valid real estate license. Violators may be subject to fines or even jail time.

4. A regional baseball scout. "Bird dogs" are generally not team employees but instead are members of a network of contacts established by a full-time area scout, and earn fees by suggesting youth players worth watching to the team.

5. A young man who goes about town searching for possible suitors, women of the night, and general romantic tomfoolery.

6. Bird-dogging is a tactic used by concerned citizens, use to pressure politicians to take a public stance on an issue, or to question a stance that they have already taken.

7. Sometimes used in the United States to describe a man who takes another man's girl. He is 'bird-dogging' the other man in doing so, and the other man becomes 'bird-dogged'. The saying is believed to be derived from 'singing like a bird' into the ear of the girl, while 'behaving like a dog' in reality by stealing the girl. This is explained and featured in the song 'Bird Dog'
