. It is known as the city of temples. Besides being a seat of spiritual learning, the city has been the centerstage of regional politics. The city is hometown to three of Haryana's chief ministers: Bansi Lal, Banarsi Dass Gupta and Hukum Singh.

District Bhiwani was created on 22 December 1972. The district headquarter is situated in Bhiwani town. Bhiwani has 442 villages, with main towns being Charkhi Dadri, Loharu, Bawani Khera and Tosham. The total area of Bhiwani district is 5,099 km².

Education

In the field of education, the city boasts of four engineering colleges, one of them being the country's top textile research institute, the Technological Institute of Textile & Sciences

, established by the prestigious Birla Group. Further, there are four degree colleges (Adarsh Mahila Mahavidyalaya is one of the best college in M.D.U.), three colleges of education and a school of nursing. The Board of School Education, Haryana (Shiksha Board) is also situated in the city.

Railways

Bhiwani Junction is a major railway station in the region. There are three railway lines originating from Bhiwani; one is towards the northern side. This line connects Bhiwani to cities like Hansi, Hisar, Sirsa (in Haryana), Bathinda, Ferozpur etc. (in Punjab).

The second line towards south side connects Bhiwani with Charkhi Dadri, Kosli and Rewari (in Haryana) which further connect to Gurgaon and Delhi in the northern side and Jaipur-Alwar in southern side.

The third branch line goes towards Rohtak and connects to Delhi.

Roads

The city is very well connected through state roadways with all the major towns in the region. The city is a chosen favorite as the site for a proposed international airport in the national capital's area to ease operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport

History

Bhiwani city is mentioned in Ain-e-Akbari. It was founded by a local King Neem after his wife Bhani. The Bhani spelling changed to Bhiyani and subsequently to Bhiwani. Bhiwani has been a prominent center of commerce since the time of the Mughals. Bhiwani is also known for its temples and is known as the "Small Kashi

Geography

Bhiwani is located at 28.78°N 76.13°E. It has an average elevation of 225 meters (738 feet).

District Bhiwani is situated between 28.19 deg. and 29.05 deg. north latitude and 75.26 deg. and 76.28 deg. east longitude. The Bhiwani District is bordered by Hissar District on its north, some area of Jhunjunu and Churu districts of Rajasthan on its west, Mahendergarh and Jhunjunu districts on its south and District Rohtak to the east. It is 124 kilometers from Delhi and 285 kilometers from Chandigarh.

Development

Bhiwani was considered a deserted place. Farming could be done with the help of rain. After every two or three years there would be a drought. Men, women, animals and birds suffered due to lack of water and greenery. Things changed when in 1893 a canal was first built in Bhiwani.

It was a religious region, and gradually the people started taking part in politics and the Indian struggle for independence. Neki Ram, Fateh Chand, K.A. Desai and Babu Gupta opened a branch of the Congress party
