Benzelius family

Benzelius is the name of one of Sweden's oldest clerical families which derives its surname from the village of Bensby in Luleå.
The family descended from Henrik Jacobsson and his wife Margaret Jönsdotter. Henrik Jacobsson must have been born in Kalix, and his wife from Luleå. Their son Eric was raised by a rich and childless uncle in Uppsala, and adopted the name Benzelius after the village he was born in.

The family has produced four archbishops, namely Erik Benzelius Younger, Jacob Benzelius, Henrik Benzelius and Carl Jesper Benzelius
The part of the family that had not entered the Church as clergy where knighted with the name Benzelstierna.
