Ben Edwards was part of the first team of lifeguards at Baywatch formed in the 1950's, known as 'The Red Knights'. He was the longest serving lifeguard at Baywatch retiring eventually in 1994.

Ben had a very close relationship with Mitch Buchannon

, and served as a mentor to him beginning from the time he trained Mitch at rookie school.

Some time before the series started Ben crushed his hip after he jumped from a huge hight to save a drowning fisherman. He was unable to swim after this injury and required the use of a walking cane. Despite being reluctant at first Captain Thorpe promoted Ben to Lieutenant instead of firing him. He served in this position for a year before being promoted again, this to time Captain, after Thorpe's departure.

Ben always felt great sadness at not being able to make water rescues anymore and after a reunion with 'The Red Knights' he decided to hand in his resignation to Mitch and Stephanie. The day he resigned he made his final rescue when he jumped off a pier to save a young boy. He was then happy to 'go out on top'.
Richard Jaeckel appeared as Ben in 15 episodes during the second season, 4 episodes during the third season and 2 episodes during the fourth season.
