 was the only applicant for the licence by the closing date of 13 July 1999 having been advertised on 12 March 1999. The service began on 26 October 2000, having had the licence awarded on 2 September 1999.

The multiplex was originally known as EMAP South Yorkshire but was renamed following Bauer Media Group's purchase of Emap's consumer media assets. Bauer Radio (former EMAP) own Hallam FM.
