Competition Format

Twelve qualified nations will be drawn into two groups each consisting of six teams. After a robin-round, the four highest placed teams in each group will advance to a knock-out round to decide the medals.

Host nation

Initially, basketball was the only discipline in which the host nation was not to be automatically awarded entry. This was because the Great Britain basketball teams did not exist until 2006, and FIBA, the world governing body of basketball, was concerned about the future of the unified British teams after 2012, as well as the total lack of competitiveness of British basketball.
