The town was first located in 1325 but was soon after destroyed by Lithuanians
. The rebuild town was granted city rights in 1364. In 1466, after the Second Peace of Toruń then known as Wartembork, became part of Kingdom of Poland
. After the First partition of Poland
it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia
. After World War II
it once again became a part of Poland in 1945. In September 1946 its name was changed to Nowowiejsk, and in December 1946 finally to Barczewo, honouring priest Walenty Barczewski (1865-1928).
