Barbados has traditionally been the strongest four-day team of the Caribbean islands, winning 19 first class titles outright, and one shared - 12 more than any other team. However, their record in one-day cricket is less impressive, with only four official titles plus the 1972-73 Banks Trophy, whose status is uncertain.

Barbados' dominance in first-class cricket since the Shell Shield was instituted in 1965-6 came in two periods - first in the 1970s, winning five Shell Shield titles in succession (including a shared title with Trinidad and Tobago
