The tribe is thought to have been formed when a group of disparate clans migrated from Najd to the Persian Gulf coast sometime in the late seventeenth century.Utub ( ) is the plural name and the singular is Al-Utbi ( ). The current ruling families of Bahrain the Al Khalifa and Kuwait (the Al-Sabah0 belong to the 'Utub, though genealogically they trace their descent to the 'Anizzah confederation. Other families of the 'Utub include Al-Roumi, Al-Zayed, Al-Jalahma, and Al Bin Ali

There has been a large spreaded rumor since 2006 that the mentioned families are not from the Utub or original Utub because they don't carry the Al-Utbi ( )last name in their ownership's document, because only the Al Bin Ali
