The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) is a well accredited and worldwide recognized veterinary school at University of Prince Edward Island, located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. == History == AVC was established and started to accept its first class in 1986 at the University of Prince Edward Island. It is the only institution in Atlantic Canada and only one of five in Canada that offers the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine certification. == Academics == The DVM program in AVC is "fully accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medicine Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the United Kingdom." AVC's Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is a four year professional degree program. The school also offers a two year pre-veterinary program which will lead to the DVM program if students score well. Each year AVC accepts 60 students into its DVM program. Approximately 35 to 40 of AVC's seats are reserved for residents of Atlantic Canada, with the remaining 20 to 25 seats available for international students. However, students who do not get entry into the DVM program may apply for other majors such as Psychology or Biomedical Science. In addition to a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree program, AVC offers Master of Science (MSc), Master of Veterinary Science (MVSc) and Doctoral (PhD) programs within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Some of the areas of expertise at the Atlantic Veterinary College include the Center for Veterinary Epidemiological Research and the Center for Aquatic Health Sciences and the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Center. == Campus == A $50 million expansion in 2006-2007 will expand current research and laboratory space at AVC facilities located on the eastern side of the UPEI campus. Visitors can locate the Atlantic Veterinary College by the following address: 550 University Avenue, Charlottetown, PE Canada C1A 4P3. ==External links== * University of Prince Edward Island * Atlantic Veterinary College Maritime PS Veterinary medicine Veterinary specialties Prince Edward Island
