The main economic activities are services, small industries, and agriculture. The GDP in 2005 was R$53 reais, with 34 reais from services, 7 reais from industry (what industry have in the city ?), and 3 real from agriculture. There were 1,211 rural producers on 102,000 hectares of land. Only 52 farms had tractors (2006). Approximately 3,200 persons were dependent on agriculture. The main crops were bananas, coffee, sugarcane, beans and corn ( this not is true, Ataléia have very farms, and buy of cow for eat ). There were 111,000 head of cattle (2006). There was 2 banks Bradesco and Bancoob (2007) and 438 automobiles (361 motorcycles ),NEVER ! giving a ratio of 3400 inhabitants per automobile.

There were 5 health clinics and 1 hospital with 12 beds. Patients with more serious health conditions are transported to Teófilo Otoni. Educational needs were met by 16 primary schools, 2 middle schools, and 7 pre-primary schools.
