History

Built in 1964 as Nottinghamshire's first purpose built comprehensive school, Ashfield School now has a self-contained 40 acres (161,874.4 m²) rural campus. Facilities include numerous computer suites, an IT Centre, modern on site sports facilities including four gymnasiums, tennis courts, all weather sports fields, running track and a swimming pool and the ATE centre . Other resources include Music Studios, a tiered Theatre and Drama Complex, Photographic Darkroom, Print Making and Ceramics Studios, fifteen science Laboratories, a Business Centre, a CAD/CAM Centre, Library and Specialist Careers Library, as well as a large canteen (called the ATE Centre).

Ashfield Skills Centre

The Ashfield Skills Centre is a £6.1 million project which will deliver 5 discrete, but philosophically linked, learning environments. The centre includes:

8 Vocational Units: All these units will be equipped to industry standard specification and will mimic an industrial or commercial context. Course content and delivery will be provided by industrial and commercial training providers in Textiles, Business, Child Care, Health & Beauty and ICT.

3 Industrial Units: Stand alone industrial units which will deliver vocational courses to include construction, plumbing, automotive, electrical, catering and hospitality courses delivered by industrial training providers RAC, Carillion and Charnwood.

Extra curricular

The PE and Music departments organise numerous extra curricular activities.

On certain nights (varies for each student), there are after school (compulsory) lessons for years 10 and 11. These lesson are called twilight sessions. The lessons you can chose for a twilight session range from beauty to engineering. As of 2010 these are optional due to staffing shortages

Controversial Issues

In late 2010, Ashfield School made news when they insisted that all students attend in full uniform, including flat shoes. Due to the amount of snow and ice, this created an issue for many, as walking to school in such hazardous conditions, in flat shoes, was dangerous. The use of boots was deemed unnecessary and anyone found wearing them to school was isolated for the day and in some cases, sent home.
