, is also known as Arteson. To reach the lake there is a dirt road from Caraz which climbs +2000m along 32km in about 1:40 hours. At Pueblo Paron (km 16) there's a check point and a gate, where visitors must pay Soles 5.00 for an unlimited access to all areas. Even when the area is within the Huascaran National Park range, on 2010 there's not yet a check point (if so, should pay Soles 65.00 for a 30-day TKT).

There are two main climbing routes: the first one runs along the North ridge, from Santa Cruz ravine (a terrific trek in itself), and the second crosses the Southeast face starting in Parón lagoon
Lake Parón
Paron lake is the largest lake in the Cordillera Blanca, on the Peruvian Andes, 32 km E from the city of Caraz, at 4185 m asl. It's nested and surrounded by several snow peaks such as Aguja I 5840, Aguja II 5888 m, Aguja III 5775 m, Caraz I 6025 m, Caraz II 6020 m, Caraz III 5720 m, Artesonraju...

. This latter demands good ice climbing technique, as it is about 50 degrees steep for well over 600 vertical metres. Access starts from the city of Caraz at 2256m. A 32 km dirt road leads to Paron lake (4200m), then a path along the north shore crosses the lake to reach the Base Camp at 4250 metres (13,944 ft).

The summit ridge of Artesonraju is well known for its fragility and special care must be taken: there is an unusually high chance of avalanches at the start of the climbing season.

During August, the windiest month, it tends to form "wind shield" so extreme caution must be taken, specially if temperatures are far below zero.
