Education

Areraj is the educational hub in the East Champaran.

This town is a mini BHU in Bihar. One can find Middle School, High School, Sanskrit high school and Degree college with a Saraswati temple in the same campus. A famous play ground is available which is the centre of all these educational institutions. Instead of a poor maintenance it has not lost its importance. If you come to Areraj don’t forget to have a look of this unique spot.

There are a dozen of private educational institutes are available in this small town. One of them is Rashtra Bharti Avasiya Vidyalay which was started on 2nd October 1986. Sri Rama Shankar Pandey is the founder of this excellent institute. He is a well reputed person. He has contributed more and more for the Department of Education in Bihar Government. After retirement he established this School and still contributing much more than his last professional job.

This school is unique because of its own rules and regulations.This school got the more importance due to its locality. School was started in this location by the respected director due to its historical importance. Our one of great Ashoka pillar is behind of this school. Ashoka pillar is the symbol of the strength and this school has contributed and still my school is contributing in national strength.

Ramarshi Dev Trivedi
Ramarshi Dev Trivedi
Ramarshi Deo Trivedi a son of landlord from Mamarkha,left his school for the freedom movement. He was the private secretary of Gandhiji while his visit to champaran...

 (1905–76). He is one of the most renowned freedom fighter of Champaran. He was nicknamed as "RUKHIJI"- 'a squirrel' because Britishers could not catch him and he would flee away after executing his task during the freedom struggle.

A special task force was formed by the Britishers to arrest him. He was later arrested and was sentenced 58 years of imprisonment but spent only 8.5 years in jail during the national freedom movement because India got independence.He was also given KALA-PANI jail, but before his departure to Andaman India got freedom.

Post independence he ran Khadi Gramudyog (a small khadi industry). He donated all his property for land reform movement carried by Vinoba Bhave

 and refused to take pensioner pass (A pass given to all national freedom fighter) because he believed that he had not participated in the freedom struggle for personal gain. He died in 1976.

Pandit Ramdev Pandey (1910-1979)
He was well know scholar of Sanskrit & Hindi. He completed “Sahityacharya Vayakran Tirth” from Sanskrit association of Bihar & Orissa in 1938, and B.A in Hindi from Patna University in 1945. Despite having such qualification at that time (before independence from a remote village) he chose teaching as a career. He knew that a teacher has more impact on the society than any other professionals, and a good teacher not only can change the way of thinking of society but also leads the society. He started his professional career as a founder teacher of someshwar high school (established by someshwer nath shiv temple trust) in 1938. In his teaching tenure he not only taught students the academic syllabus, But also he took them to different parts of India like Rameshwaram and Ajanta cave as a scout guide either by school fund or on his own expenditure. Even after retirement he continued his habit of taking students on India tour. He retired as head master of Someshwar high school Areraj in 1972. He was a member of Someshwer Sanskrit high school managing group. He also served the post of secretary of parvati girls high school Areraj. He was also a member of sanatan Brahman samaj. He also wrote on several topic like history of areraj for local magazine Jyouti. He done hard work for the construction of Sarswati temple in between all institutional building, Any one can find his name is in the list of temple founders in temple premises. He died in 1979 by natural way. It was a big loss for Areraj, almost all institutions were closed for 3 days to Condolence his death.

Umesh Narayan Pandey(1940-2008)
He was the elder son of late Sri Pandit Ramdev pandey. He was the 1st student from Areraj to complete double M.A (1ST in History & Archeology in 1962 & 2ND in Hindi in 1966 from Patna University. After completing M.A from Patna University he had a lot of job opportunities at national level, although he chose teaching as a career because he had a vision to improve educational environment of Areraj. Along with teaching students in school, he also taught them at his home free of cost. He was not only associated with education but also with various social activities like Shiv temple committee issue. He was the only one to fight against the corrupt mahant(priest) of the shiv temple. After his enormous efforts, a committee was formed in 2006 to regulate the shiv temple administration and incoming donations. He was also a regular writer for Aryavart newspaper. He has also written some interesting books like “Areraj mahatmya” and “Navratra pujawidhi”. He was a religious man. He was founder chairman of Jalpa bhawani temple committee. He retired as headmaster of high school areraj. He died in 2008 after prolong illness. Due to his valuable contribution in the filed of education he was known as guruji not only in Areraj but also whole East champaran district.

Ideal Teacher–Late Shri Parma Nand Mishra(1945-1985)Late Parma Nand Mishra was not an introduction seeker, his personality, his education and his amicable nature had proved several times about his socialistic approach in his society.
He was born in a simple family in village in Pipra of Govindganj in 1945. He received his secondary education from Areraj high school and did higher secondary from Motihari. He was a graduate of M.S. college Motihari and passed M.A from L.S. College, Muzaffarpur at that time his father dared to send him for his higher studies, which was beyond the expectation but during his testing times he received an efficient education after all his hardships. He contributes his carrier as a teacher of English in Areraj High School. During his educational carrier he became an activist of CPI. Publicity was just chasing him because of his punctuality as a teacher and polite nature of helping the poor students who were clamoring for their secondary studies. He became an ideal of several of students/guardians later on he became the leader of Teacher’s association.


He always used to use his spare time in taking free classes in high school campus. He had not forgotten his hardships when his father had send him to schools and colleges and he intersected himself as a student in those students who belongs from weaker section of his locality. He was also fond of script writing and producing dramas. Several times and different occasions he directed many dramas, and played many roles on the stage in his village Pipra. He loved to maintain discipline people, of his locality perceive him as a strict personality.

In early morning of 12th May 1985 brought an unexpected day, who he kept on sleeping, left this world for his two unmarried sons and four unmarried daughters forever. This news had it’s some another way of transmission, whoever listened this news walked towards his residence for his last glimpse. It was a big loss for Areraj, almost schools and colleges were closed by his associates on that day to condolence his death. At present he is not with us however, his foot strips have helped numerous students as well as no. of teachers for full fill their dreams.

Places of interest

Areraj is a holy city of North Bihar which is 28 km. south West of Motihari, The district headquarters and the nearest railway station, linked with a double length road now designated a state highway.

The Someshwar Nath Shiv Temple attracts lakhs of pilgrims from other districts as well as Nepal on the occasion of Shrawani Mela (During July-August) and is enshrined to Shiva

Areraj is situated on tha bank of Gandak river.

The Jalpa bhawani temple which is situated at 1.5 km west of shiv temple in Hardiya village is also a attractive place for religious people due to its peaceful environment. During navratri people comes from very remote places to take a glimpse of jalpa mai.
