In the 1960's he opposed desegregation busing in the United States. In July 1967 advocated armed white self-defense and he formed the North Ward First Aid Squad as a vigilante group.

In 1973 he won a seat in the New Jersey State Senate as an independent candidate. He was defeated in 1977, but was elected again in 1979 as a member of the Republican party
