. Anna C. Verna was elected to Philadelphia City Council in 1975, defeating three others in the Democratic primary. In 1999, Verna became the first woman in Philadelphia's 300-year history to assume the Presidency of the City Council of Philadelphia.

Verna has been a consistent supporter of tax reform in Philadelphia and has fought for affordable housing in various areas of her district, which extends from Center City through Southwest Philadelphia.
