, the township has a total area of 17.7 square miles (45.9 kmē), of which, 17.6 square miles (45.7 kmē) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 kmē) of it (0.51%) is water. The city of Ann Arbor was established within the borders of Ann Arbor Township. Over the years, the city expanded, annexing portions of the township as it grew and reducing the land area of the Township until it sought and obtained charter status.
