 with 3,705 inhabitants was separated from Ankenes to form a separate municipality. The split left Ankenes with a population of 3,023.On January 1, 1974 Ankenes became a part of Narvik. At that point Ankenes had a population of 7,022 inhabitants, Narvik had 12,758.

Ankenes Church (Andenes kyrkje) is an octagonal church dating from 1842. It was built of timber and has 290 seats. Access to the site is via the E6. Ankenes is also known for Millerjordbukta, its shopping area and the local football team Hardhaus. Ankenes Skiing Resort (Ankenes Alpinsenter) is in Ankenesstrand. The facility has 8 runs and 2 lifts. The facility was established in 1972. In 1973, the Ankenes Alpine Club was also established.
