After having learned the business of publishing working for Francis Aldor (Aldor Publications, London) with whom he was interned in the Isle of Man during the Second World War and who had introduced him to the industry, André Deutsch left Aldor's employment after a few months to continue his burgeoning publishing career with the firm of Nicholson & Watson. After the War he started his first company Allan Wingate which survived for five years. André Deutsch Limited started trading in 1952.
His small but influential publishing house ran until the 1980s, and included books by
