This district consists of 7 blocks: Breng, Shangus, Achabal, Dachnipora, Qazigund, Khoveripora and Shahabad. Each block consists of a number of panchayats. This district consists of many tourist places viz: Achabal, Kokernag, Verinag, Phalgam, out of these Phalgam is the most famous place just 50 km from Anantnag Town.

One of the most famous shrines in Hinduism,dedicated to the god Shiva,(Amarnath yatra) is located in Phalgam.
