Aloe vera, also known as the Medicinal Aloe, is a species of succulent plant that probably originated in northern Africa. The species does not have any naturally occurring populations, although closely related Aloes do occur in northern Africa.... plant, is created by the extracting and processing of the gel of the aloe plant, most commonly aloe vera barbadensis miller.
Aloin, also known as Barbaloin [Reynolds, Aloes - The genus Aloe, 2004], is a bitter, yellow-brown colored compound noted in the exudate of at least 68 Aloe species at levels from 0.1 to 6.6% of leaf dry weight [Groom & Reynolds, 1987), and in another 17 species at indeterminate levels [Reynolds, 1995b].... , a natural cathartic. Today, many manufacturers remove aloin during processing, therefore eliminating the laxative effect.
