Alliance Pipeline is a natural gas
Natural gas
Natural gas is a naturally occurring gas mixture consisting primarily of methane, typically with 0–20% higher hydrocarbons . It is found associated with other hydrocarbon fuel, in coal beds, as methane clathrates, and is an important fuel source and a major feedstock for fertilizers. Most natural...

transmission system that transports high-energy, rich natural gas from northeastern British Columbia and northwestern Alberta through Saskatchewan, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa to its terminus in Illinois.

Approximately 1.6 Bcf/d of rich natural gas is safely delivered to Chicago each day, supplying approximately 5% of the residential natural gas needs for this market. The system, including lateral and delivery segment lines, is more than 3719 km (2,310.9 mi) long with 14 mainline compressor stations—seven in Canada and seven in the United States. The compressors are driven by 31,000 to 40,000 horsepower (23 to 29 MW) gas turbines—similar to the turbines that power large airplanes.

Canadian portion of the system

of 1067 mm (42-inch) and 1221.73 km (759.1 mi) of 914 mm (36-inch) diameter steel pipe
  • 51 receipt points connecting with lateral pipelines totaling about 731.36 km (454.4 mi), ranging in length from about 0.3 to 142 km (0.2 to 96 miles) and in diameter from 114 to 610 mm (4 to 24 inch)
  • 7 mainline compressor stations of about 23 to 34 MW (31,000 to 46,000 hp) each, spaced about 193 km (119.9 mi) apart
  • mainline block valves spaced about every 32 km (19.9 mi) apart

The United States portion of the system

of 36-inch (914 mm) diameter steel pipe
  • 7 compressor stations of about 31,000 hp (23 MW) each, spaced about 120 miles (193.1 km) apart
  • 9 delivery stations, including Aux Sable and Hankinson (scheduled to be online in April 2008)
  • mainline block valves spaced about every 20 miles (32.2 km) apart
