Allan "Al" Hubbard was an American
animator
and comic book
writer. He is best known for his work on the Donald Duck
stories, and was the cocreator (with Dick Kinney
) of the character Fethry Duck
and took up cartooning and animal illustrations. Between 1948 and 1951, he shared a studio with Hubie Karp, Jim Davis and Jack Bradbury
.
During the 1950s, he worked at Dell Comics
and remained there throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He worked with licensed characters from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
("Tom and Jerry
", "Spike & Tyke", "Andy Hardy"), Warner Bros.
("Sylvester", "Mary Jane and Sniffles") and Walter Lantz
("Andy Panda"). However, his best known work was on the Disney comics.
Hubbard was known for his ability to draw animals; perhaps his greatest achievement was the series Scamp, the son of the film Lady and the Tramp
. He also worked with several series of versions of Disney films, such as Lady and the Tramp, The Jungle Book
, The Aristocats
and Peter Pan
. In addition, he painted Disney characters for coloring books and children's books.
