Al-Zarrar uses modular composite armour and explosive reactive armour to give improved protection from anti-tank missiles, mines and other weapons.

's 902 Heavy Workshop, making that country the first export customer of the Al-Zarrar..However, in a recent change in events the Bangladesh Army has opted to upgrade its existing 300 Type-59/59II tanks to Type-59G variant at its 902 Heavy Workshop. Recently one Type-59G tank is already been procured from China as a sample for production which has a completely different turret similar to Chinese Type-96 tank. It has also reactive armour and advanced technologies that are found in modern third generation tanks. Type-59G tanks are also regarded as more advanced than Pakistan's Al-Zarrar and Myanmar's Type-59D tanks..
