The Académie de la Grande Chaumière (academy of the large thatched cottage) is an art school in the VIe arrondissement of Paris, France. The school was founded in 1902 by the Swiss Martha Stettler (1870–1945) (often spelled "Marthe"), who refused to teach the strict academic rules of painting of the École des Beaux-Arts. It opened the way to the "Art Indépendant" (Independent Art). It was renamed Académie Charpentier in 1957.
An attraction of this atelier was the fees, even lower than the Académie Julian (which had to be paid in advance). All that was provided was a model and warmth in the winter.
