. The AMusA, also called AMus, is considered a prestigious award, ranking above the eight grades available. The AMusA is the grade above the CMusA (Certificate in Music) and the grade below the LMusA (Licentiate in Music). An AMusA practical examination is conducted by two examiners and lasts for roughly forty-five minutes. Candidates applying for an AMusA practical must prepare repertoire that is no longer than forty minutes, but no shorter than thirty minutes. The other ten minutes is used for testing general knowledge.

Marking an AMusA exam is different to grade exams. From Preliminary to Eighth Grade, the marking ranges from A+ (exceeding all requirements) to a D (not meeting satisfactory requirements). For all diploma examinations, there are only three possible marks that can be attained. "No Award" means one has not met requirements to gain the diploma. "Award" means one has met requirements to gain the diploma. "Award with Distinction" means one has exceeded requirements to gain the diploma. The current pass rate is approximately at 30% of all applicants.

Australian musicians consider the AMus to be at a level of performance standard equivalent to or greater than undergraduate performance practice in a dedicated conservatoire. The repertoire list for performance candidates - a list of pieces from which candidates must choose a set number of pieces - contains challenging works which show a candidate's mastery of his/her instrument. For candidates in performance, a prerequisite pass in fifth grade musicianship or musical theory is needed for the award. The AMusA is awarded in these performance categories:
  • Piano
  • Organ
  • Accordion
  • Electronic organ
  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Violoncello
  • Double Bass
  • Recorder
  • Flute
  • Oboe

  • Bassoon
  • Saxophone
  • Horn
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Tuba
  • Euphonium

This test is funded by the AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) which is a private, Australian institution which creates grade tests. The test is not compulsory and is for those who want to become professional musicians. This level is the second-last offered by the AMEB.
