Rutgers–St. John's controversy

The second round St. John's-Rutgers game was criticized for poor officiating on the part of veteran officials Jim Burr, Tim Higgins, and Earl Walton. In the final play of the game, Justin Brownlee of St. John's stole an inbounds pass from Rutgers's Gilvydas Biruta to preserve a 65–63 victory for St. John's. In celebration, Brownlee clearly travelled, stepped on the sideline, and threw the ball into the stands with 1.7 seconds still on the clock. The officials allowed time to expire without calling an infringement, thereby denying Rutgers a last-second shot for a tie or win. John Adams, head of officials of the NCAA, later said the non-call was "unacceptable." On the day following the game, ESPN reported that the three officials who worked the game had voluntarily withdrawn from the Big East tournament "in the best interests of everyone involved."
