29-year-old Pete Sampras
was the four-time defending champion, but he lost in the fourth round to 19-year-old and future six-time Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer
in what would be one of the most notable matches in tennis history. Although Sampras and Federer would later play each other in exhibition matches, this was the only match when the two played each other in any ATP tournament, and it is today recognised as a symbolic changing of the guard, with the new generation's greatest champion, Federer, defeating Sampras, the previous generation's best.
