The year 1999 in film involved some significant events and was arguably the most successful year for films released in the 1990s. Several new feature films, including Star Wars Episode I, The Sixth Sense, new sequel Toy Story 2, first of The Matrix, Disney's animated Tarzan, The Mummy, and the highly acclaimed American Beauty, were released.
The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was awarded to All About My Mother (Todo sobre mi madre), directed by Pedro Almodóvar, Spain/France.

As of December 9, 2008, forty films released in 1999 have grossed more than $100 million, reaching blockbuster status. Six films have grossed more than $400 million, reaching "international blockbuster motion picture" status. One film (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace) has grossed more than $900 million, making it the sixth highest grossing film in history. And it was the first time that over five films released in one year reached IBMP status (Only 4 films released in 1990 made IBMP status).
