 in the championship game. The Tar Heels won the tournament for the 15th time in school history, adding to their ACC record. The record would stand until 2006, when Duke won their 16th ACC Tournament in school history.

From 1998-2000, the ACC Tournament adopted a format that ensured the top seeded team would play the last place team in the first round. The winner of this game would have a bye for the quarterfinals, playing their next game in the semifinal round. The play-in game
