130   Claudius Ptolemy discovers the star cluster now known as Ptolemy's Cluster.

964   Persian astronomer Abd Al-Rahman Al Suffi discovers the Andromeda Galaxy.

1610   Galileo Galilei discovers four moons orbiting the planet  JupiterIo, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.

1610   Nicholas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc discovers the Orion Nebula.

1610   Galileo Galilei discovers rings of the planet Saturn.

1654   Giovanni Battista discovers the Triangulum Galaxy and the Butterfly Cluster.

1665   Giovanni Cassini discovers the Great Red Spot on Jupiter.

1714   English astronomer Edmund Halley discovers the Hercules Cluster.

1731   Astronomer John Bevis discovers the Crab Nebula.

1745   Swiss astronomer Philippe Loys de Chéseaux discovers several notable nebulae including: the Eagle Nebula, the Swan Nebula, the Omega Nebula and the Lobster Nebula.

1751   French astronomer Nicholas Louis de la Caille discovers the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy.

1764   Charles Messier discovers the Dumbbell Nebula.

1773   Charles Messier discovers the Whirlpool Galaxy.

1774   Johann Elert Bode discovers the Cigar Galaxy and a galaxy which would later be named in his honor, Bode's Galaxy.

1779   Astronomer Pierre Mechain discovers the Sunflower Galaxy and the Black Eye Galaxy.

1779   French Astronomer Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix discovers the Ring Nebula.

1781   William Herschel discovers the planet Uranus while measuring the brightness and direction of stars.
