Timeline

1680   The first documented tornado in America kills a servant at Cambridge, Massachusetts.

1879   A F4 tornado struck Irving, Kansas, killing 18 people and injuring 60.

1890   A tornado strikes Louisville, Kentucky, killing 76 people and injuring 200.

1917   Tornado strikes Mattoon, Illinois causing devastation and killing 101 people.

1932   Tornado and huge waves kills about thousand in Santa Crus del Sure in Cuba

1933   Tornado destroys the town of Tampico in Mexico.

1934   Tornado in Osaka and Kyoto and destroys the rice harvest - 1660 dead, 5400 injured

1953   Flint-Worcester Tornadoes: A tornado hits in Flint, Michigan and kills 115. This is the last tornado to claim more than 100 lives.

1971   Fifty tornadoes rage in Mississippi, killing 74.

1974   The Super Outbreak, the largest series of tornadoes in history, hits 13 U.S. states and one Canadian provin By the time the last of 149 tornadoes hit early the following morning, 315 die and over 5,000 are injured.

1980   A series of deadly tornadoes strikes Grand Island, Nebraska, causing over $300m in damage, killing five people and injuring over 250.

1984   A deadly F5 tornado nearly destroys the town of Barneveld, Wisconsin, killing 9 people, injuring nearly 200, and causing over $25,000,000 in damage.

1985   Forty-one tornadoes hit in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario, leaving 76 dead.

1994   A tornado outbreak occurs in Southeastern United States. One tornado hits the United Methodist Church in Piedmont, Alabama killing 22. This outbreak is the biggest tornado event of 1994.

1996   Severe thunderstorms and a tornado in Bangladesh kill 600.

1998   Tornadoes in central Florida destroy or damage 2,600 structures and kill 42 (see Florida El Niņo Outbreak).

1998   Birmingham Tornado of April 1998 : An F5 tornado strikes the western portion of the Birmingham, Alabama area, killing 32.

1999   A F5 tornado slams into Moore, Oklahoma, killing 38 people - the second strongest tornado ever recorded in United States history. (See Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak). A possible tornado outbreak with similar force will take place sometime in the next 250-500 years.

1999   An F-2 tornado rips through downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, killing one person and injuring over 100.

2005   Evansville Tornado of November 2005: A tornado hits western Kentucky and southwestern Indiana, killing at least 22.
