1811   Paraguay declares independence from Spain.

1844   Carlos Antonio Lopez becomes dictator of Paraguay.

1850   Entre Ríos Province in Argentina revolts - it is backed by Brazil in alliance with Paraguay and the Uruguayan Colorado Party

1851   Dictator Rosas overthrown in Argentina. New government recognizes independent Paraguay. New Blanco government in Uruguay

1859   Paraguay mediates a truce between Buenos Aires government and the Argentinean Confederation

1862   Francisco Solano López becomes Paraguayan dictator

1864   Brazil invades Uruguay in support of Venancio Flores. Paraguay attacks Brazil.

1865   Triple Alliance of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay against Paraguay is formally signed - War of the Triple Alliance has already begun.

2004   A supermarket fire in Asunción, Paraguay, kills about 400 and leaves over 100 missing.
